The application period for grants from the Sakari Alhopuro Foundation will open on 1 February and continue until the end of the month. Applications for science grants can be submitted for environmental research and research that advances natural biodiversity and conservation, as well as for medical research with a focus on interactions between microbes and humans.

“Microbes seem to be associated with several national diseases, and thus, investing in research on microbes is motivated both in terms of public health and the national economy”, Managing Director of the Sakari Alhopuro Foundation, Carita Rantanen, explains the focus for this year’s applications.

Microbes are not only potential pathogens, but they also play an important role as guardians of our health. Recent research has shown that intestinal bacterial flora is an essential factor for our health.

“We need further scientific evidence on the microbial impacts in order to better understand the pathogenesis of various diseases. Research-based knowledge contributes to the prevention of diseases and development of new treatments", says Professor Pentti Huovinen, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation.

Science grant applicants are required to have received a doctoral degree within the past seven years. Grant applications can also be submitted for multidisciplinary research.

Applications for art grants can be submitted for art and artistic work dealing with climate change, the environmental crisis, the state of Finnish nature and nature conservation. The application assessment will primarily emphasise the vision and goal-oriented approach of the work. Art grants are awarded to projects that will result in, for example, a work of art, a presentation or an exhibition.

All grant applications shall be submitted through the Foundation’s online grant application service. The link for logging in is found on the Foundation’s website, together with detailed application criteria and instructions.

Grant applicants will be informed about the decision by email no later than 31 May 2026. The names of the grant recipients will be published on the Foundation’s website.
